Who We Help

What could the vision of eight bridge-playing women have told them in 1946, as they formed their ideas for a new women's civic group in Akron?  Had they known what services would be provided to the Akron area community over the last 75+ years, they could not have provided a better foundation for the group.  Within the first year, the eight founders, Reita Huffman, Jeanne Keller, Harriet Maloy, Carolyn Martens, Dorothy Parker, Jane Ransweiler and Bernice Turnbaugh, and 32 charter members, furnished a room at the Kate Waller Home for juvenile girls.  With profits from a rummage sale, they hosted a tea for prospective members, completing the first year with approximately 70 members.

Our group was named Junior Women's Civic Club, or JWCC. In 2023 we wanted to better communicate who we were with our name so the club voted to rebrand ourselves as Women for Greater Akron Charities or WGAC. With a refreshed name and renewed enthusiasm our core values remain unchanged.
